When do we begin to prepare for Christmas?

If you believe some of the stories, men do this at about 4pm on Christmas Eve. Women begin preparations during the January sales, collecting sale bargains and half-price cards to be used in eleven months time. Many people start to think about Christmas when some specific event triggers the senses, and turns their thoughts towards the festive season.

This event could be the sight of the first Christmas tree filled window, or the smell of a mincemeat pie. It could be writing this year’s letter to Santa, or seeing the fist Advent candle lit. Children could believe that it begins when School breaks up, or the first day of December arrives.

This year, Christmas preparations began for me in June, the day that Alan Gibson stopped by after Sunday service and said "Hugh, can I talk to you about…. Camels?" Since that day, our ‘Camel Crew’ has met on many occasions, praying for guidance, and planning an event which we hope will bring the true meaning of Christmas once more to the people of Strathaven.

We have planned a ‘Bethlehem Experience’ for all who wish to join us on Monday 15th December, in Strathaven’s Common Green at 6.30 pm, to sing carols, greet friends and family and to join a fantastic procession, led by three wise men mounted on camels, accompanied by a throng of pilgrims, young and old (many dressed in period costume) as they travel from Kirklandpark Primary School to Avendale Old Parish Church.

The Church will serve as our modern Bethlehem, where families can register their names as part of the House of David, before enjoying again the wonderful story of the Nativity, sampling the food and drink prepared in our ‘Bethlehem Bazaar’ and finding joy in the company of friends and family in a Christmas setting.

We hope to fill the Common Green and the Avendale Old with people who represent all of our local Churches, as well as those who have no Church connection at all, in order to bring the real message of Christmas to Strathaven.

Please spread the word…… The Camels are coming!
